What the Geminids are
Most meteor showers come from comets. The Geminids are different. They trace back to 3200 Phaethon, a rocky asteroid that sheds debris as it swings close to the sun. Every December, Earth passes through that debris trail, and the particles burn up high in our atmosphere as streaks of light.
