Stargazer Night
Stargazer Night sends your family outside after dark to find three stars, planets, or constellations together. It is one of the simplest quests on the Outside calendar and one of the most memorable. All you need is a clear sky and a willingness to look up.

How to run a great Stargazer Night
Start inside with a short conversation about what your family hopes to find. A specific question helps: Is anyone looking for a planet? Does someone want to find the Big Dipper? Curiosity focused in advance tends to stay lit longer once you are outside.
Head out at least an hour after sunset so the sky has fully darkened. Give everyone ten minutes of quiet adjustment time before the identifying begins. Human eyes need roughly twenty minutes to reach full night vision, and rushing past that window is the most common reason families feel frustrated. Use a red flashlight or a phone app set to night mode if you need to check a star chart, since red light preserves your adjustment far better than white light does.

What if we live in a city with a lot of light pollution?
You can still complete this quest from a city. Venus, Jupiter, the moon, and the brightest stars in major constellations are visible even through moderate light pollution. A short drive to the edge of your city or a nearby park often makes a noticeable difference. If your sky is heavily overcast or washed out, use a free planetarium app to identify what is overhead anyway, then plan a clear-night attempt later in the week.
Do we need any special equipment?
No equipment is required. Comfortable shoes and water are the only supplies on the list. A red flashlight is a helpful addition if you want to read a star chart without losing your night vision, and a free sky-map app on your phone can name stars as you point the camera at them. Neither is necessary to earn the badge and complete the quest in the Outside app.
What time should we go out?
Aim for at least an hour after your local sunset. Full darkness and a sky away from the moon's brightest phase give you the most to work with. In summer, that means waiting until after nine o'clock in many parts of the country. In fall and winter, you get a darker sky earlier, which makes Stargazer Night easier to fit into a school-night schedule.
How do we know if what we are seeing is a planet or a star?
A useful rule of thumb: stars twinkle and planets tend to hold a steady light. This happens because stars are so far away that their light passes through more atmosphere and scatters, while planets are close enough to show a small disk that stabilizes the light. It is not a perfect rule in every condition, but it works well enough to settle a good family debate and points everyone in the right direction.
