Finding the Big Dipper

It is visible on most clear nights in North America throughout the year, though in summer it rides high and in winter it sits lower in the north.
Once you find the bowl, locate the two stars that form its outer edge. Those are the pointer stars. Draw an imaginary line through them upward and follow it about five times the distance between those two stars. You land on Polaris, the North Star, which barely moves all night. That is true north.
Finding Orion
Orion is a winter constellation, most prominent from November through March in the Northern Hemisphere. Look for it in the southern sky after dark. The signature is three stars in a short, nearly straight row: Orion's Belt. Once you see the belt, the rest of the hunter's shape falls into place around it. Bright reddish Betelgeuse marks his shoulder; blue-white Rigel anchors his opposite foot.
Orion is a useful landmark beyond its own borders. Extend the belt line to the left and you reach Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky. Extend it to the right and you point toward the Pleiades star cluster. Kids who find Orion's Belt tend to feel at home in the winter sky almost immediately.
Finding Cassiopeia
Cassiopeia looks like the letter W, or sometimes M depending on its position, made of five moderately bright stars. It sits on the opposite side of Polaris from the Big Dipper, which makes it especially useful on autumn and early winter evenings when the Dipper is low in the north and harder to use.
To find it, locate Polaris first using the Big Dipper method, then sweep your eye in the opposite direction across the North Star. A ragged W shape against the Milky Way is Cassiopeia. It never sets below the horizon for most of North America, so it is technically visible every clear night, though fall evenings give the best view.
Practice drill: one sky, fifteen minutes
Pick a clear night and head outside after full dark, at least thirty to forty-five minutes after sunset. Give everyone a minute or two to let their eyes adjust without phone screens.
Then run this sequence:
- Round one: Ask each person to find the Big Dipper on their own. Youngest kids may need a nudge toward north. - Round two: Have whoever found it first trace the pointer stars and point to Polaris. Let the others follow the line. - Round three: Rotate everyone to face south (winter) or let them scan for Cassiopeia's W in the north. Call out the shapes as you spot them. - Round four: Ask one kid to teach the next youngest what they just learned. Teaching it once cements it.
The whole drill runs ten to fifteen minutes and works best when no one uses a phone.
