Meet the tree
The Douglas-fir is not actually a fir. Botanists placed it in its own genus, Pseudotsuga, which translates roughly to "false hemlock." The name can confuse newcomers, but the tree itself is anything but confusing once you know what to look for. It is one of the dominant conifers of western North America, covering millions of acres from British Columbia down through the Cascades, Sierra Nevada, and Rocky Mountains. Bark on young trees is smooth and gray with resin blisters. On older trees it thickens into deep, corky ridges that turn reddish-brown and can be several inches thick. That bark is one reason old-growth trees survived centuries of low-intensity fire.
In shape, Douglas-firs grow in a classic tall pyramid when young, with slightly drooping branch tips. Very old trees lose their lower limbs and develop a more open, irregular crown high above the forest floor.

Douglas-fir is the signature tree in some of America's most beloved national parks and forests. Western hemlock also has flat needles but they are shorter, uneven in length, and the tree's leading tip droops distinctly to one side.
