The battlefield is big and best taken in stages, so pace yourself and let the landscape do the teaching.

Harpers Ferry sits where the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers meet in the West Virginia hills, and almost every chapter of American history ran through it. Families can walk the same cobblestone streets where John Brown made his stand, cross a footbridge used by Appalachian Trail hikers, and take in one of the best river views in the East.

Vicksburg National Military Park tells the story of the 47-day siege that cracked the Confederacy in two and handed the Union control of the Mississippi River. Kids can walk the same ridges Union and Confederate soldiers defended, then stand beside a real Civil War ironclad pulled up from the river bottom.
