Why the compass is the right first tool
A GPS tells a child where they are. A compass teaches a child to figure it out themselves. That is a different and more durable kind of knowledge.

Taking a bearing in three steps
A bearing is simply a direction expressed as a number between 0 and 360 degrees. North is 0 or 360, east is 90, south is 180, west is 270. Everything else falls in between.
To take a bearing to a landmark:
1. Point the direction-of-travel arrow at your target. 2. Rotate the compass housing until the orienting arrow lines up under the red (north) end of the magnetic needle. Hikers call this "boxing the needle" or "putting red in the shed." 3. Read the number at the index line on the baseplate. That number is your bearing.
Now your compass is set. As long as you keep walking with red in the shed and the direction-of-travel arrow pointing forward, you are on that bearing. Practice this in the backyard first, picking obvious targets: a fence post, a tree, the corner of the garage. Kids who can do it in ten feet can do it in ten miles.
Backyard compass games that actually stick
The fastest way to build real skill is to make the compass solve a problem a kid actually cares about.
**Treasure bearing:** Hide a small object. Write a series of bearings and step counts on a card. Kids follow each leg in sequence to find the prize. Start with three legs; add more as confidence grows.
**Bearing bingo:** Call out a bearing number. Kids set their compass, spin to face that direction, and point. First one correctly aligned wins the round. Fast, loud, and surprisingly competitive.
**Return trip:** Walk fifty paces on a bearing you choose together. Then ask the kids to figure out the back-bearing and walk home. The back-bearing is always 180 degrees away from your outgoing bearing. If you walked out on 45 degrees, you walk back on 225.
These games work in any backyard, empty parking lot, or open field. No trail required.
A word about magnetic north versus true north
Your compass points to magnetic north, which is not exactly the same as true north (the geographic North Pole). The difference between the two is called declination, and it varies depending on where you are in the country.
For backyard games and casual trail navigation, declination rarely matters enough to change what you do. But when you start pairing a compass with a topographic map for serious navigation, you will want to account for it. Most topo maps print the local declination right on them. In much of the eastern United States the difference is a few degrees east; in the west it can be significantly larger.
For kids under ten, skip declination entirely and focus on the four cardinal directions and basic bearing work. Introduce the concept naturally when they are ready for map-and-compass work together, usually somewhere around ages ten to twelve.
Choosing and caring for a compass
A quality baseplate compass does not need to be expensive, but it should be sturdy, legible, and liquid-filled. The liquid dampens the needle so it settles quickly instead of swinging for half a minute. Look for clear, large degree markings and a needle that is easy to distinguish from the housing.
Teach kids to keep the compass away from magnets, large metal objects, and electronics, all of which can deflect the needle and give a false reading. When you are taking a bearing in the field, hold the compass level and away from belt buckles, phones, and car doors.
Store it flat, out of direct sunlight. A good compass can last decades with basic care. Some of the most satisfying ones are inherited from grandparents who used them on trails that the grandkids will someday walk themselves.
